| After working as
a commercial photographer, I now shoot self-initiated subjects
for the art market. I have exhibited in France and Hong Kong. As
a photographer my fascination is with light. In my black and white
work I especially enjoy seeking out landscape subjects where the
light is at work, revealing both form and texture in the natural
environment. While I like the ability of black and white photography
to record natural forms in an almost abstract way, transforming
the scene into dramatic shades of grey tone, a trip to the South
West of the U.S.A. opened my eyes to the colour properties of light;
vivid skyscapes, while more two-dimensional, have an energy and
an appeal of their own. Landscape photography for me presents a challenge to root out the unnoticed, to live with the place for a while and feel one's one way into expressing what was special about it. My all-time favourite landscape photographer is Thomas Joshua Cooper who describes photographers' need to "gaze" into the landscape they encounter; in the sand dunes of the Moroccan Sahara and some of the extraordinary canyons and deserts in the USA, I began a similar process, and my aim is to produce work which is both a geographical record but also an emotional interpretation of the scene. Designer Print's facility for largescale canvas printing on my favoured Epson materials enables me to see images of my work which retain the engulfing breadth and feel of the original landscapes. |
